Chapter 8

The next morning dawned dreadful in Elizabeth’s mind, she could not deny she had come to care for Mr Darcy, more than care if she was being truly honest with herself, and the prospect of not seeing him for who knows how long weighed on her.

At least she would be able to know of him through his sister, and that thought put a smile to her face. She rose from her bed and began to compose a letter to Miss Darcy. She spoke simply and without flourish of how she had befriended her brother and how eager she was to begin a friendship with the girl, she also detailed a little of her home, her sisters and her favorite songs. She sealed the letter and set it aside to be posted, satisfied that it would make some progress if Miss Darcy was indeed wishing to be her friend, something she wholeheartedly believed in.

She went out for breakfast to a wholly awake house, which was unusual. Elizabeth was far too used to rising before her family, but she supposed she had slept more due to the ball, not to mention the time she spent writing her letter.

So she took her place at the table and tore at a piece of bread, ready to sip her tea, when her mother indicated she should hurry for Mr Collins wished to speak to her urgently.

Not wishing to displease her mother so early Elizabeth downed the warm liquid and swallowed a piece of the bread, and headed out to the sitting room, where Mr Collins was awaiting her.

She did not know why on earth Mr Collins wished to speak to her privately, but she was not in a good mood so it annoyed her immensely.

She gave him a smile more out of politeness than actual gladness in seeing him, at which he came to stand much more close to her than she was comfortable with.

“My dear cousin Elizabeth” he began speaking in his unpleasant baritone “I believe you are not completely caught by surprise by my address, as no woman could be insensitive to my attentions” oh no Lizzie thought horrified, but he continued “my great patroness Lady Catherine…”

“Mr Collins” she tried to interrupt but he persisted

“...has recommended I set the example of matrimony in my parish by choosing one of my fair cousins to take the honorable place of my wife…”

“Mr Collins” she tried again, to no avail.

“Would it be amenable to you if we married in three weeks time?” he asked her, fully confident in her assent

“Of course not” she said, agast

“Well to wait over a month…” he began, at which point she nearly shouted to silence him

“Mr Collins” she said, exasperated “I do not wish to marry you”

“I understand completely” he replied, and she was fully confused

“You do?” she asked cautiously

“Yes, of course” he smiled at her “you wish to deny me first, only to accept me in a second proposal, as is the custom of elegant females”

Lizzie nearly rolled her
